Education and Homeowner Tips
The Maryland Department of Agriculture works closely with soil conservation districts (SCDs) to educate youngsters on the benefits of clean water, productive soil and a healthy food supply. SCD-sponsored soil judging contests, classroom visits, conservation camps and career workshops help promote a sense of environmental responsibility and interest in our young people. Districts also sponsor the Envirothon, a field-oriented, problem-solving natural resource competition for high school students interested in learning about the outdoors. Designed by soil conservationists, foresters, wildlife experts and other natural resources professionals, the Envirothon challenges students to move beyond the classroom in order to solve real-life environmental problems in a natural setting. Teens work closely with SCDs to compete at the county, state, and international levels. For more information, contact your local soil conservation district listed at right.
