School Food and Nutrition Service Department
The Food & Nutrition Services Departments in each local school system prepare and serve nutritious and appealing meals to students, and staff in a positive, cheerful manner, while maintaining financial soundness, and contributing to the quality and excellence of the educational experience. These programs are self-supporting and receive funds from student payments, and federal and state reimbursement for meals served to students. No local funds are used to support the programs. School Nutrition Directors incorporate locally grown agricultural products into their program whenever possible. The number of meals served in a school system varies throughout the state - Montgomery County, one of the largest schools systems in Maryland, serves over 14 million meals annually. All school breakfasts and lunches meet Federal nutrition requirements based on the current U.S. Department of Agriculture's Dietary Guidelines for Americans
