Animal Disease Traceability
Premises Registration
The Maryland Department of Agriculture, Animal Health Section is building upon previously established and successful animal health and animal identification programs involving many animal industry federal-state partnerships. Premises registration is a voluntary federal-state industry partnership developed to help respond to and minimize the impact of an animal disease outbreak. The first step in implementing an animal identification system is identifying and registering premises where livestock is congregated. Knowing where animals are located is the key to an efficient and cost effective investigations and disease control response to an outbreak. The Maryland Department of Agriculture, Animal Health Section is committed to this program.

STATE ANIMAL DISEASE TRACEABILITY PROGRAM REPLACES FEDERAL NATIONAL ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM
The federal government has proposed regulations that would require states to implement and oversee individual official animal identification for animals moving in interstate commerce. The National Animal Identification System (NAIS), the federal program for animal identification managed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), has been reduced to a federally operated database system available to states for regulatory purposes. States are in the process of reviewing and implementing methods to ensure that animals have official identification when they enter into interstate commerce, which includes most large sales such as auction markets, or movement across state borders. The proposed federal rule indicates that identification in cattle will be the first species required to have official identification, with other species phased in over time. General information about animal disease traceability, the proposed rule and a summary of the requirements proposed can be found at the USDA website at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/traceability/index.shtml
